Randwick weather and local climate guide

Randwick's transitional coastal climate

Randwick occupies a gently elevated plateau between Sydney's eastern beaches and the inner suburbs, creating a transitional climate zone. It benefits from coastal proximity without the direct wind exposure of beachfront suburbs. Summer maximums average 26-27 degrees, typically 1-2 degrees warmer than the beach but 3-4 degrees cooler than the inner west. The suburb's elevation of 40-70 metres above sea level allows it to catch sea breezes effectively while being above the fog layer that occasionally sits along the coastal strip. Randwick Racecourse and Centennial Park create significant green space that moderates the urban heat island effect.

The University and Hospital precinct microclimate

The UNSW campus and Prince of Wales Hospital complex at the northern end of Randwick creates its own microclimate through extensive building mass and paved areas. This precinct is typically 1-2 degrees warmer than surrounding residential streets, particularly on summer evenings when buildings release stored heat. The campus also creates a minor wind shadow for areas directly to its southwest during northeast sea breezes. Conversely, the Randwick Racecourse and Royal Randwick parklands at the western edge provide evaporative cooling that benefits adjacent homes on still days.

Rainfall and drainage

Randwick receives approximately 1,150 millimetres of annual rainfall. The suburb's position on a sandstone plateau means natural drainage is generally excellent, with rainwater percolating quickly through sandy soils. However, the impervious surfaces of the commercial centre and hospital precinct can cause localised ponding during intense rainfall. Avoca Street and Belmore Road intersections are known trouble spots during heavy rain. The suburb contributes to the Botany Bay catchment via Bunnerong Creek, and extreme rainfall events can cause downstream flooding in the Botany wetlands area.

Seasonal patterns

Randwick's seasons are clearly defined but mild. Summer brings warm days with reliable afternoon sea breezes reaching the suburb by early afternoon. The racecourse creates a heat reservoir that keeps the western parts of Randwick slightly warmer into the evening. Autumn is the most consistently pleasant season with mild temperatures, low humidity, and the golden tones of deciduous trees along Alison Road. Winter sees overnight temperatures occasionally dipping below 8 degrees in the more exposed parkland areas but rarely approaching frost. Spring warms rapidly from September, with jacarandas flowering along many residential streets in October-November.

Wind exposure and shelter

Randwick's inland position provides significant wind reduction compared to the beachfront. Average wind speeds are 30-40 percent lower than at Coogee or Maroubra, making outdoor dining and recreation more comfortable in most conditions. The strongest winds reach Randwick during southerly changes, which arrive with minimal obstruction from the south. Northeast sea breezes are the most frequent wind type but are notably weakened compared to their beachfront strength. The mature Norfolk Island pines along Avoca Street and fig trees in Randwick's parks provide effective windbreaks for ground-level activities.

Randwick weather for outdoor events

The Royal Randwick Racecourse hosts major outdoor events year-round, making weather knowledge essential for attendees. Spring carnival (October-November) typically offers the best racing conditions with mild temperatures, moderate humidity, and manageable winds. Autumn racing enjoys warm, settled weather. Summer meetings can be uncomfortably hot, with the grandstand providing the only shade. The UNSW Open Day in September usually coincides with the transition between winter cool and spring warmth. Centennial Park, bordering Randwick's west, is best for cycling and running in the early morning when winds are lightest and temperatures coolest.
