Maroubra weather and local climate guide

Maroubra's exposed coastal position

Maroubra Beach faces due east into the Tasman Sea along a 1-kilometre stretch of open coastline. Unlike the sheltered bays of Coogee and Bronte, Maroubra receives the full impact of ocean swells, northeast winds, and southeast groundswells with minimal headland protection. This exposure creates a windier, more dynamic beach environment. Summer maximums average 26-27 degrees but feel cooler due to consistent onshore winds averaging 15-20 kilometres per hour in the afternoon. The suburb extends significantly inland from the beach, with areas around Maroubra Junction experiencing temperatures 2-3 degrees warmer than the beachfront.

Surf climate and ocean dynamics

Maroubra is renowned as one of Sydney's best and most consistent surf beaches. Its straight, open coastline picks up swell from virtually every direction between northeast and south. The beach has multiple peaks that shift with sandbar formation, and the southern end near Mahon Pool offers more protected conditions. Water temperature follows Sydney's seasonal pattern of 18 degrees in winter to 24 degrees in late summer. The beach's exposure means it generates stronger rip currents than more sheltered beaches, particularly during larger swells and dropping tides. Mahon Pool at the southern headland provides tide-dependent ocean swimming.

Rainfall and seasonal patterns

Maroubra receives approximately 1,150 millimetres of rain per year. Its flat topography inland means stormwater management is critical, with the Malabar drainage system handling catchment flows. Autumn east coast lows bring the heaviest rainfall events, sometimes exceeding 150 millimetres in 24 hours. The exposed beachfront amplifies the perceived intensity of storms, with salt spray carried inland during strong onshore gales. Summer thunderstorms reach Maroubra more frequently than suburbs further north, as the suburb sits in the path of storm cells tracking northeast from the airport.

Temperature and wind patterns

The dominant weather feature in Maroubra is wind. The northeast sea breeze dominates summer afternoons, while southerly changes arrive with full force across the exposed coastline. Westerly winds are the only direction providing relative calm at the beach, and these typically bring the warmest temperatures as they represent continental air masses overriding the sea breeze. Temperature inversions occasionally trap cool marine air below the coastal escarpment on calm autumn mornings, creating a fog layer that burns off by mid-morning. The headland at the northern end of the beach (Jack Vanny Reserve) is one of the windiest publicly accessible points in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

Severe weather and coastal hazards

Maroubra's exposure makes it particularly vulnerable to coastal storms. East coast lows generate waves exceeding 4 metres that break directly onto the beach, causing significant erosion of the dune system behind South Maroubra. Storm surge during extreme events can reach Marine Parade, and king tides demonstrate the vulnerability of low-lying infrastructure. Rock fishers on the Maroubra headlands face some of Sydney's most dangerous wave conditions, with fatalities occurring when unexpected sets wash anglers from platforms. Rip currents at Maroubra are among the strongest on Sydney's coast.

Living with Maroubra's weather

Maroubra locals adapt their lifestyle around the wind. Early morning (before 9am) offers the calmest conditions for swimming, walking the coastal path, and surfing. Autumn provides the most consistently pleasant conditions with warm water, reduced wind, and golden light. Winter attracts serious surfers who benefit from cleaner swells and offshore morning winds. Properties on the beach side of Anzac Parade command premium values partly for their climate advantage — direct sea breeze access on hot days. The Arthur Byrne Reserve and Heffron Park provide welcome wind shelter for picnics and sport when the beach is too blustery.
