Narrabeen weather and local climate guide
Narrabeen's lagoon and beach climate
Narrabeen sits between the ocean and Narrabeen Lagoon, one of Sydney's largest coastal lagoons. This dual-water position creates a uniquely humid microclimate. Summer maximums average 26-27 degrees, kept moderate by the constant onshore flow. The lagoon adds moisture to the air, making dew points slightly higher than at beaches without backing water bodies. The long, straight beach faces east-northeast, collecting the full fetch of Pacific swells and the dominant summer sea breeze. Winter temperatures remain mild at 16-17 degrees thanks to the warm East Australian Current's influence on the northern beaches.
Lagoon flooding and weather impacts
Narrabeen Lagoon is the defining weather vulnerability of the suburb. The lagoon catchment extends deep into the Collaroy Plateau and Frenchs Forest, meaning heavy rain anywhere in the northern beaches can cause flooding at Narrabeen. When the lagoon entrance berms up (sand blocking the outlet to the ocean), water levels can rise rapidly during extended rainfall. Historical flood events have inundated properties along Lagoon Street and the low-lying areas of Ocean Street. Council manages the lagoon entrance mechanically to prevent catastrophic flooding, but intense east coast lows can still overwhelm infrastructure. The 2022 floods saw water reach verandah level in some lakeside properties.
Coastal erosion and storm damage
Narrabeen Beach is one of Sydney's most studied beaches for coastal erosion. The beach experiences regular cycles of erosion and recovery, with major storm events stripping up to 20 metres of beach width in extreme cases. The Collaroy-Narrabeen coastal protection debate has dominated local politics for decades. East-facing exposure means large east-northeast swells drive the worst erosion, particularly when combined with high tides. Properties along Ocean Street sit dangerously close to the erosion escarpment. Sea level rise projections suggest increasing frequency of damaging events in coming decades.
Seasonal weather patterns
Summer at Narrabeen brings consistent beach weather with afternoon sea breezes, occasional thunderstorms, and water temperatures reaching 23-24 degrees by late February. Autumn delivers the finest conditions: warm water lingers, crowds thin, offshore winds create clean surf, and the lagoon ecosystem is at its most vibrant. Winter sees consistent swell providing excellent surfing, whale migration offshore, and morning frost absent thanks to maritime influence. Spring is variable, with alternating warm spells and cool southerly outbreaks, but reliably brings increasing daylight and rising water temperatures from September onward.
Wind and surf conditions
Narrabeen's long beach offers multiple surf breaks that respond differently to wind and swell direction. The northern end near the lagoon entrance works best on south swells, while the southern end near Collaroy handles northeast swell better. Onshore northeast winds dominate summer afternoons, making morning sessions (before 10am) essential for quality surfing. The lagoon entrance creates a permanent rip current that shifts position with sand movement. Wind-driven chop on the lagoon provides flat-water sailing and paddle boarding conditions when the ocean is too rough for casual recreation.
Narrabeen compared to nearby beaches
Compared to Dee Why (2 kilometres south), Narrabeen offers a longer beach with more surfing options but greater flood risk due to the lagoon. Compared to Mona Vale (3 kilometres north), Narrabeen is slightly more sheltered from south swells but more exposed to northeast conditions. The lagoon creates higher local humidity than both neighbours, making summer feel stickier despite similar measured temperatures. Narrabeen receives slightly more rainfall than Dee Why due to the enhanced moisture from the lagoon surface contributing to local convection during unstable atmospheric conditions.
