Glebe weather and local climate guide

Glebe's inner harbour position

Glebe sits on the western edge of the inner city, sloping down to Blackwattle Bay and Rozelle Bay on Sydney Harbour's western reaches. This harbour frontage provides maritime temperature moderation while the suburb's position behind the CBD means it receives sea breezes that have already warmed slightly over the urban landscape. Summer maximums average 27-28 degrees, sitting between the cooler eastern suburbs and the warmer inner west. Winter minimums stay around 8-9 degrees, kept above frost levels by harbour proximity and urban heat. The suburb's north-facing harbour frontage receives excellent winter sun.

The Glebe foreshore microclimate

The harbour foreshore park running from Blackwattle Bay to Bicentennial Park creates a distinct microclimate along Glebe's waterfront. Temperatures at the water's edge run 2-3 degrees below the inland parts of Glebe Point Road on summer afternoons, thanks to harbour breezes and the thermal mass of the water. This makes the foreshore walking path comfortable even on hot days when the commercial strip feels stifling. The harbour also acts as a source of humidity, with morning mist occasionally forming along the foreshore on autumn mornings when water and air temperatures diverge.

Urban heat and heritage streetscape

Glebe's dense Victorian and Federation terraces, narrow streets, and mature fig trees create a complex urban microclimate. The terraced houses retain heat during summer evenings (their sandstone and brick thermal mass radiating stored warmth) but provide natural cooling during winter days (the same mass absorbing and moderating temperature swings). Broadway at Glebe's southern edge is the suburb's hottest zone: wide, traffic-heavy, and heat-absorbing. By contrast, the narrow lanes off Glebe Point Road with their overhead fig canopy can be 3-4 degrees cooler on summer afternoons.

Rainfall and drainage concerns

Glebe receives approximately 1,200 millimetres of annual rainfall. The suburb's slope toward the harbour means most rainfall drains efficiently, but the lowest points along the foreshore can experience tidal backflow during combined high-tide and heavy-rain events. Johnstons Creek, which runs along Glebe's western boundary (largely underground), can overflow during intense rainfall, affecting properties near the Jubilee Park area. The February 2020 storm event demonstrated this vulnerability when stormwater overwhelmed drains and briefly flooded the foreshore path and lower sections of the residential streets.

Glebe Point Road climate for markets and dining

Glebe Point Road's dining and market culture is shaped by its weather profile. The Saturday Glebe Markets benefit from the suburb's sheltered inland position (less wind than harbour-front or coastal markets) and the mature tree canopy of Glebe Public School that provides shade. Summer markets are most comfortable before noon when temperatures are still building. The restaurant strip along Glebe Point Road faces approximately northwest, catching afternoon winter sun that makes outdoor dining viable from April through September. Summer evening dining is warm and calm, with harbour breezes arriving weakened after crossing the foreshore park.

Seasonal character of Glebe

Glebe's inner-city position means its seasons are more subtle than outer suburbs but more pronounced than the coast. Summer is warm with reliable but gentle afternoon cooling — the harbour effect prevents the extreme heat that western suburbs endure. Autumn is Glebe's premium season: plane trees along Glebe Point Road turn golden, temperatures sit perfectly at 22-25 degrees, and the harbour foreshore is ideal for walking. Winter brings crisp mornings, low-angle sun catching the heritage terraces, and cosy café culture. Spring sees the return of evening foreshore activity and the Jacarandas that purple several Glebe streets from late October.
