Sydney Metro Expansion: Next Phases Lock in Tunnel and Upgrade Timelines

The first phase of Sydney Metro City & Southwest opened on 19 August 2024, introducing driverless trains through the CBD and harbour between Chatswood and Sydenham.

Metro Completion Path

The remaining Bankstown line segment from Sydenham to Bankstown is scheduled to open in 2026. This step will finish the full 30.5 km metro rail project and extend direct services along the southern corridor.

Western Harbour Tunnel Outlook

The $74 billion Western Harbour Tunnel is anticipated to open in late 2028. It will connect WestConnex to the northern suburbs and provide a route that bypasses the CBD, altering cross-harbour travel patterns once operational.

Metro West Revision

Metro West is revised to open in 2032 with a potential cost of up to $29 billion. The project will link the CBD to western Sydney once delivered.

Fast-Track Infrastructure Spend

NSW invested $40.9 million to fast-track critical infrastructure. This covers road upgrades in Waterloo and a pedestrian link through Parramatta CBD, with delivery expected by mid-2026.

Key Decisions Ahead

Project teams will now coordinate integration of the 2026 metro segment with existing services, manage construction sequencing for the 2028 tunnel, and align the 2032 western extension with broader network planning. Delivery of the $40.9 million upgrades by mid-2026 will also require ongoing oversight of the Waterloo and Parramatta works.
